The First Step
My favourite French film is Les 400 Coups, I know it’s a cliché and everyone
claims it’s their favourite, but I think its broad appeal is what makes it so
brilliant. However I know France has so much more has to offer other than the
classic New Wave genre which is so well known across the world; this is what I
want to explore! To encourage myself to view more films and learn more French I
have set myself the task of watching ‘the
top 100 best French films’ from TimeOut
magazine. I am very daunted by this list as I have started many “top 100” lists
and finished none of them. So I am hoping that by saying on the internet what I
am going to do I will have more motivation to actually complete it this time.
I am
moving to France next year as part of my course so fingers crossed I’ll get a
French perspective on some of the films on the list. I think it will be
interesting to find out whether their most popular exports are the most popular
at home. I have an inkling, for example, that the perceptions of Paris as being
the fairy tale image portrayed in Amelie might
not be the one which some Parisians living in deprived suburbs are overly
thrilled with. Although I may be hoping for more tension and grit than is
present. We’ll see!
This
blog will mainly consist of my opinions and how they change after I have moved.
I aim to post fortnightly, but if this list grips me I might end up posting
everyday… who knows. I will try and do the list from 100 working towards number
one however I may change a few about depending on my mood.
My next
post will be in two weeks where I will be writing about Gaspar Noé’s Enter the Void!
